Should you choose a lawyer or hire a public defender?

Going to court is stressful. If you are facing criminal charges, you want to make sure your case is in the best hands possible. Many people opt to have a public defender in these situations, however, this might not be the best option for you.

While hiring a public defender may seem simpler and more intuitive, in most cases, they will not be able to get you the best result. If you are accused of a crime and need to go to court, you might want to consider hiring a private attorney, who can better work for you and figure out your case.

Cons of a public defender

The major issue with public defenders is that they are often too busy. Since they are government employees that work for the courts, they usually have very large caseloads. That means that they will likely be handling a number of other cases at the same time as yours. Your case may not get the diligent dedication it deserves, which means you might not be given the best potential options.

Public defenders are often hard to get ahold of, too. If you have questions about your case, you might not be able to get in contact with them until your appointed time.

Pros of a private attorney

When you hire a private attorney, they can dedicate much more time and effort to your case, though it can cost more money. However, private attorneys can build better defenses and get access to more resources to help your case. A private attorney may be able to figure out a way to help you avoid jail time, or even get your charges dismissed.

Private attorneys generally have much more availability and are more reachable. For these reasons, hiring an outside attorney could benefit you in immeasurable ways. In all situations, you should take time to carefully examine your options when choosing a lawyer so you can ensure you are in the best situation possible.
