Florida woman faces DUI charge

A woman accused of driving drunk with her infant child in the car is in police custody at this time, according to local sources. The Florida woman has been charged with DUI and several other charges related to an accident police believe she may have caused. Social services has been alerted to the situation and may be pursuing a court order to obtain custody of the woman's child.

According to the arrest record, the 21-year-old woman was driving with her boyfriend and their 3-month-old child in the car when she allegedly crashed into a vehicle in front of her. The force of the impact caused the other car to spin out, with debris striking and damaging a third vehicle. When police arrived at the crash site, they say the woman appeared visibly intoxicated with a strong smell of alcohol emanating from the car. They also say she admitted to being drunk.

It does not appear that any injuries were caused by the crash. The woman has since been booked into a county jail in advance of a trial date, which has not yet been announced. There is also no word as to whether she has retained criminal defense counsel.

DUI charges are taken very seriously in Florida, where the woman could face jail time if found guilty. In addition, the Department of Children and Families could take action with respect to custody of her child, a fate few parents would wish for. This is why it will be so vital for her criminal defense team to carefully review the facts of the case to determine whether officers on the scene respected her rights during the arrest process. If protocol was not followed and her rights were violated, this could influence the outcome of the court case.
